Which Countertop Material Is Right for You?
Choosing the right countertop can have a major impact on your home’s style, daily function, and long-term value. Whether you’re planning a kitchen remodel, bathroom renovation, outdoor kitchen, or new construction project, understanding the differences between quartz, granite, quartzite, marble, and porcelain can help you choose the surface that best fits your lifestyle and design goals.
Let’s break it down.
Quartz
Quartz is an engineered surface made from natural minerals, resins, pigments, and recycled materials. Because it is manufactured, Quartz offers more consistency in color and pattern than natural stone.
Unlike natural stone, quartz is non-porous and does not require sealing.
Best for Easy Maintenance and Consistent Design
Quartz is a strong choice for homeowners seeking a clean, modern, and predictable look. Since the pattern is engineered, homeowners can select a design with more confidence about how the finished countertop will appear.
Quartz can offer:
- Marble-inspired veining
- Contemporary solid colors
- Concrete-look designs
- Consistent patterns throughout the slab
- Modern and transitional styles
Durability and Maintenance
Homeowners should know:
- Quartz does not require sealing.
- It offers excellent stain resistance.
- It is scratch resistant.
- It is non-porous and easy to care for.
- Quartz can crack or burn under direct or prolonged heat exposure.
- Using trivets or hot pads is recommended for hot cookware.
Cost and Value
- Quartz: $55 to $150 per square foot
Quartz pricing is generally more predictable because colors are manufactured and readily available across multiple collections.
Choose Quartz If You:
- Prefer a low maintenance countertop
- Want consistent color and pattern
- Like modern or transitional design
- Want a family-friendly surface
- Do not want to seal your countertops

Granite
Granite is a natural stone formed deep within the Earth’s crust through the slow cooling of molten rock over millions of years.
Every slab is unique. Color, veining, mineral patterns, and movement vary naturally, making each countertop one of a kind.
Best for Homeowners Who Want Natural Beauty
Granite is a great option for homeowners who love authentic natural materials. Granite offers the beauty and individuality that only natural stone can provide.
Homeowners can expect:
- Natural movement
- Unique mineral patterns
- Rich depth and character
- One-of-a-kind slabs
- A timeless, elegant appearance
Durability and Maintenance
Natural stone is known for strength and beauty, but it does require some care. Even with added stain protection, natural stone is porous and the porosity can vary depending on the material.
Homeowners should know:
- Granite requires periodic sealing.
- Pits and fissures may occur as natural characteristics.
- Natural stone can stain if spills are left sitting too long.
- Natural stone offers excellent heat resistance and strong scratch resistance.
- Marble is beautiful but it’s softer than granite and can scratch easily. It is also more susceptible to staining.
Cost and Value
Pricing depends on the specific stone, rarity, pattern, and origin.
- Granite: $60 to $100 per square foot
Choose Granite If You:
- Love natural stone
- Want a one-of-a-kind countertop
- Appreciate natural variation
- Prefer organic, timeless design
- Are comfortable with period sealing and maintenance

Homeowners can expect:
- Dramatic veining
- Natural movement
- Bright, luxurious appearance

- It is one of the hardest natural stones available.
- It resists scratching better than many other natural stones.
- Natural variation should be expected.

Porcelain
Porcelain countertops are manufactured from refined natural materials that are compressed and fired at extremely high temperatures.
The result is an incredibly dense, durable surface with exceptional resistance to heat, UV exposure, and staining.
Best for Maximum Durability
Porcelain is often chosen by homeowners who want a sleek, contemporary look with strong resistance to everyday wear. Porcelain has very low porosity and exceptional resistance to scratching or staining. It is also a good option for outdoor applications because it resists UV exposure and temperature changes, while providing a sophisticated, architectural look.
Porcelain can offer:
- Large-format designs
- Ultra-modern finishes
- Realistic stone-inspired visuals
- A clean architectural look
Durability and Maintenance
Porcelain is designed for performance and durability.
Homeowners should know:
- Porcelain offers exceptional heat resistance.
- It is UV resistant.
- It is stain resistant.
- It is scratch resistant.
- It has extremely low porosity.
- It can be used indoors or outdoors.
Important Design and Fabrication Notes for Porcelain
Porcelain is a very durable surface, but there are a few important fabrication details homeowners should understand before choosing it.
Unlike natural stone and quartz which are manufactured as 3cm, Porcelain is manufactured only in 2cm. Unlike quartz, where the color and pattern are poured throughout the slab, Porcelain’s pattern is printed on the surface. Because of this, veining or patterning will not continue through a standard eased edge.
For designs with visible veining or movement, we recommend a mitered edge. A mitered edge allows the pattern to appear on the face of the countertop edge, creating a thicker and more finished look.
However, even with a mitered edge, the veining will not continue around sink openings or other cutouts.
Customers should also know that Porcelain can be exceptionally susceptible to chipping along countertop edges, especially compared to quartz.
Cost and Value
- Porcelain: $95 to $150 per square foot
For homeowners focused on durability and long-term performance, many consider Porcelain’s value well worth the investment.
Choose Porcelain If You:
- Want maximum durability
- Need an outdoor countertop option
- Prefer a contemporary look
- Prioritize heat and UV resistance
